Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a cast-iron skillet or greased 8x8-inch pan in the oven to heat.

Prepare the Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).

Mix the Wet Ingredients:

  • In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, and melted butter.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:

  • Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined (do not overmix).

Pour the Batter into the Pan:

  • Carefully remove the heated skillet or pan from the oven and pour in the batter, spreading it evenly.

Bake the Cornbread:

  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Cool and Serve:

  • Let the cornbread cool for about 5 minutes before slicing. Enjoy warm with butter or honey!
