For the Cake:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 ¾ cups sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
For the Fondant:
- 1 batch white fondant
- Gel food coloring blue or pink
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- 2 tbsp vegetable shortening
For the Filling (Optional):
- 1 ½ cups buttercream frosting
- 1 cup filling chocolate ganache, jam, or custard
For Decorations:
- Edible glitter or sprinkles
- Gender reveal toppers optional
Bake the Cake:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- Beat butter and sugar together until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each.
- Mix in vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with milk. Stir until smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly between the pans and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely.
Prepare the Fondant:
- Divide the white fondant into two portions. Use gel food coloring to color one portion blue or pink, depending on the gender reveal.
- Dust your work surface with cornstarch. Roll out the white fondant and the colored fondant into thin, even layers.
Assemble the Cake:
- Once the cakes are cooled, place the first layer on your cake board.
- If using a filling, spread it on top of the first layer. Add the second layer on top.
Cover with Fondant:
- Use vegetable shortening to lightly grease the cake's surface. This will help the fondant adhere better.
- Roll out the white fondant large enough to cover the entire cake. Gently drape it over the cake and smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles.
- Repeat the same with the colored fondant, using it to create any decorative details or patterns (like ribbons or flowers).
Add Decorations:
- Decorate the cake with edible glitter, sprinkles, or toppers for that extra pop.
- Add fun touches like baby-related items or gender reveal signs.
