  • 1 tablespoon of capers
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh dill chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of butter optional, for spreading on the bread
  • Lemon wedges for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Bread:

  • Start by slicing your rye bread rolls in half. If you prefer, lightly spread butter on the inside of each half for extra richness.

  • Place a Matjes herring fillet on the bottom half of each bread roll. Make sure the herring is evenly spread to cover the surface.

Add the Toppings:

  • Top the herring with thinly sliced red onion, capers, and a sprinkle of fresh dill. Adjust the amount of each ingredient based on your preference for flavor.

Season:

  • Lightly season with freshly ground black pepper to taste.

Finish and Serve:

  • Place the top half of the bread roll on the assembled ingredients. Serve with a lemon wedge on the side for a refreshing citrus twist.

Enjoy:

  • Cut the sandwich in half if desired and serve immediately for the freshest taste!
