Base
- 3 ripe heirloom tomatoes sliced thick
- 225 g fresh mozzarella or bocconcini sliced or torn
- 1 handful fresh basil leaves whole or gently torn
Finishing and Flavor
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil for drizzling
- 1 tsp flaky sea salt such as Maldon
- 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper to taste
Optional Additions
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar or reduction for drizzling
- 1 tbsp pesto lightly spooned between layers
- 1 sliced peach optional sweet twist
- 1 avocado sliced, optional dairy-free richness
- 1 handful strawberries halved, optional fruit twist
- 1 tbsp fresh mint leaves optional for freshness
Slice the tomatoes into thick, even slices. Cut the mozzarella into rounds or gently tear if using burrata.
Arrange tomato slices on a serving platter, slightly overlapping. Place mozzarella slices or pieces between each tomato. Tuck basil leaves in between.
Let the salad sit at room temperature for 20–30 minutes to enhance the flavors.
Drizzle extra virgin olive oil evenly over the salad just before serving.
Sprinkle flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Add optional ingredients like balsamic glaze, pesto, peaches, avocado, strawberries, or mint for a personalized touch.
Serve immediately to enjoy the freshest flavors and textures.
Use a serrated knife for cleaner tomato slices. Bring ingredients to room temperature before assembling. Salt just before serving to prevent excess moisture. Halved cherry tomatoes and bocconcini make for a neat presentation.
